SeaClear PC Mapping Software

December 17th, 2008

Many mariners use a separate navigational software package on a laptop aside from the vessels GPS chart link.  Many mapping software packages are available from companies like Raymarine, Garmin, Fugawi and Maptech.  All provide exceptionally designed software that is run from a PC but comes with a price.  SeaClear is mapping software that is free and has been for over 10 years.  It was created by a boat owner who did not find any mapping software he liked and decided to write his own.  The other great thing about SeaClear is all NOAA raster navigational charts (RNC) can be downloaded free again and stored on your computer for use with SeaClear.  Check it out and let us know what you think.

Remember the cardinal rule of navigation.  Nothing replaces current paper charts and the ability to use them.

Thanks again Tom for the tip!

Nordic Tug Factory Tour

December 16th, 2008

For those that have never been to the Nordic Tug factory to take a personal tour to see just how the best domestically built boats are fabricated, The GLANTOA blog is bringing it to you.  Photos and descriptions of the new facility and what goes on behind the front office walls.  The new production hall was completed in October of 2007 and has been an integral part in the construction of all Nordic Tugs.  We’ll bring this to you in an abbreviated version on the blog.   Please click to our online factory photo album to see the entire factory tour highlighting the wiring, Corian, woodwork and final preparation of the assembly process leading up to the sea trial.

If you’ve ever been in a fiberglass production facility, you know first hand the kind of environment it can be.  Dusty, lack of proper ventilation, poor lighting, generally not very orderly and the permeating odor of styrene. These all contribute to a poor product and less than conducive employee attitude.  Not so at Nordic Tugs.  Here’s a look at how it is at Nordic Tugs production facility in Burlington, WA.

Nordic Tug 26 Goes To Sea Trial

December 15th, 2008

The Nordic Tug 26 went to sea trial the last week of November.  The factory has indicated that all went very well and the 26 performed to their expectations.  A few minor changes will be made and the interior is very close to completion.  In true Nordic Tug fashion, the 26 is unmistakably the newest member of the Nordic family and we are very anxious to see her on the Great Lakes this summer.  Thank you Paul Johnson for the great photos.

Perfect Stereo For a Nordic Tug 32

November 11th, 2008

Want to install an excellent stereo with a sub-woofer in your Nordic 32 but not sure where it could go or what equipment to use?  Thanks to Tom, owner of 32-301, he has painstakingly spent time measuring and figuring out that a Bose sub woofer will go into the forward storage compartment under the settee and leave room for a few things to be stored as well.  Coupled with the awesome Bose Jewel Cube speakers that proportionately fit nicely into the main saloon of the 32 and tuck in close to the valance boards, it is a sweet setup.  And it sounds fantastic.  Nothing beats a stereo setup with a sub woofer.  Especially on a Nordic Tug.  Pictures of the installation are illustrated here.  If you need more information, email the webmaster.

The sub woofer sits nicely into the forward storage area under the settee.

We all know storage space is a big issue on most boats meant for cruising and the sub woofer installation leaves additional room for items that are easily accessible.

Only the required air vent gives away the location of the sub woofer until it is powered up.

The Bose Jewel Cube speakers are some of the best available and compliment any Nordic Tug interior with their small appearance and big sound.

Nordic Tugs Stability & Buoyancy Evaluations

September 19th, 2008

Just how stable are Nordic Tugs?  Many people wonder and ask ” How much water can they take”.  The mere profile of a Nordic Tug begs the question.  Nordic Tugs recently underwent extensive testing to find out just how safe and stable the boats really are.  Did Lynn Senour design a boat nearly 30 years ago that would meet or exceed today’s rigourous requirements?  Joe Franett, VP of Operations for Nordic Tugs lets us know how the testing went and what was involved.  Click here or the photo to download the PDF article.
